Is Overskill Free? Free Credits, Trial, and Real Cost

October 17, 2026

Overskill · Cost

The short answer is no, but there is a real free start. Here is exactly what you get, what stays free, and what you will pay for.

A lot of people ask me if Overskill is free (I earn a commission if you buy through this link). It is a fair question. Nobody wants to pay before they know a tool works for them.

Here is the honest answer, using only what Overskill publishes on its own site as of October 16, 2026. No guesses.

Quick answer

No. Overskill does not have a free plan. Every new account starts with 500 credits so you can try building, and paid plans start at $25 a month (checked Oct 16, 2026). Some things are always free, like hosting your app, page views, previewing, and publishing. Building and changing your app is what uses credits.

The short answer from Overskill itself

Overskill answers this on its pricing page. The question "Is there a free plan?" has this answer: "There's no free plan to sign up for. Every new account starts with 500 credits so you can build something real before choosing a plan, and plans start at $25/mo."

Overskill pricing FAQ answers: a typical change uses 400 to 1,500 credits, and there is no free plan but new accounts start with 500 credits

So you can try it for free. You just cannot stay on a free plan forever. For a full breakdown of every plan, see my Overskill pricing guide.

Also good to know: anyone can sign up now. Its homepage says to sign up with your email and confirm it, and an invite code is optional.

What 500 free credits can actually do

500 credits sounds like a lot. Here is how far it goes, using Overskill's own estimates from its pricing page:

Illustration: table of what 500 starter credits can cover using Overskill estimates
Illustration: what 500 credits can cover, based on Overskill's published estimates
  • A typical change uses 400 to 1,500 credits. Most land around 700.
  • A fresh build from a description usually uses 2,000 to 8,000 credits.
  • Overskill shows you an estimate before any big change runs.

So with 500 credits, you can get a feel for how the builder works. You likely cannot finish a full app. That is not a trick. It is just how the math works.

Mistake to avoid: Spending your free credits on a giant "build me everything" prompt. Start with a template or one small screen, so you can see real results before the credits run out.

What is always free on Overskill

Overskill's help center splits costs into two meters: building your app, and your live app doing work for visitors. A lot of things cost nothing at all. Its help article lists these as free:

Free (no credits)Uses credits
Hosting your app, 24/7Asking the AI to build or change your app
Page views, whether 10 visitors or 50,000Questions you type into the builder chat
Email and password sign-in for your usersAI features your users run inside your app
Previewing your app in the editorEmails (0.1 credits each)
Publishing and re-publishingText messages (1.6 credits each)
Version history and rolling backErrors and retries

From Overskill's help article "What costs credits and what is free," checked October 16, 2026.

One more limit: every workspace includes 50GB of database storage and 100GB of file storage. Past that, Overskill charges $1 per GB per month for database storage and $0.05 per GB per month for files. Most small apps will not get close.

What you pay after the free credits

When your 500 credits run out, Overskill says generation pauses. You can buy a credit pack or pick a plan. Here are the two plans on the live pricing page:

Starter$25/mo$250/yr (about $20.83/mo)2,500 a month

Plan credits refill every month and do not carry over. Credit packs you buy never expire. Overskill always spends plan credits first.

What the $25 Starter plan adds over the free start

Here is what the live pricing page lists for Starter:

  • 2,500 credits every month (five times the free start)
  • 1 build running at a time
  • 1 custom domain per app, so your app can live on your own web address
  • The Overskill Lite AI model
  • No watermark and private projects
  • Email support

Studio, at $99 a month, adds stronger AI models (including one called Overskill Max), 4 builds at once, 5 custom domains per app, full version history, and priority support. Most beginners do not need Studio on day one.

Both plans let you download your app's code and data as a ZIP file from the Publish dialog. Overskill says GitHub sync is rolling out. That matters, because it means you are not locked in.

What happens when the free credits run out

This part worries people, so here is what Overskill says, step by step:

  1. Building pauses. The pricing page says generation pauses when your credit balance runs out. You cannot ask the AI for new changes until you add credits.
  2. You choose what to do next. You can buy a one-time credit pack or pick a plan in billing.
  3. Your credits stay if you upgrade. Overskill says when you change plans, every credit you already have stays in your balance.

Also think about your live app. If your app uses AI, email, or text messages for your visitors, those actions use your credits too. A simple app with screens, forms, and sign-in costs almost nothing per visitor, according to Overskill's help center. An app that runs AI for every user will use credits each time.

Who should pay and who should wait

Pay for a plan ifStay on the free start if
You have one clear app ideaYou are still deciding what to build
You know who the app is forYou just want to see how it feels
Your app needs sign-in, saved data, or paymentsYou only need a simple one-page site
You will show it to real people this monthYou have no time to test this month

If you are in the right column, that is fine. Use the free credits to learn. Come back when you have an idea worth building.

The cheapest way to keep building

If you want to spend as little as possible, here is what I would do:

  1. Start from a template. Overskill's templates page listed 385 published templates when I checked. Changing one costs less than building from nothing.
  2. Edit, do not rebuild. Overskill's help center says editing an existing app is almost always cheaper than rebuilding it.
  3. Pick Starter yearly if you are sure. $250 a year works out to about $20.83 a month. Only do this once you know you will keep building.
  4. Use the referral bonus. Overskill's help center says when someone you referred makes their first paid purchase, you both get 1,000 credits.
  5. Roll back for free. If a change breaks something, go back to the last good version. Rolling back costs nothing.

Is there a free AI app builder instead?

Some builders do have free plans. For example, Bubble's pricing page lists a Free plan at $0 with 500 AI credits a month for building. Bubble works differently, though. It mixes AI with a drag-and-drop editor. I compare a few popular builders in Lovable vs Replit vs Bolt vs Cursor.

My honest take: free is great for learning. But if your goal is a real app that people pay for, the tool cost is small next to the time you spend. Pick the tool that gets you to a working app fastest.
