Build with AI · Head to head
One builds the whole app for you in your browser. The other works inside your code. Here is how to choose, and how to use both.
I use both. My own software, MakerAI, lives in Lovable. And I build with Claude too. In my own words: "I've used Lovable, I've used Claude, I've used Overskill just because... I do a lot of apps."
People ask me which one is better. The honest answer is that they do different jobs. Here is what each one is, what it costs, and how I would pick. Prices were checked on each company's pricing page on October 18, 2026.
Quick answer
Lovable is an AI app builder in your browser. It builds the app, the database, and hosting for you, and it is best if you do not code. Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding agent. It works inside a codebase from your terminal, IDE, desktop app, or browser, and it is best if you want full control. Lovable has a free plan and Pro from $25 a month. Claude Code needs Claude Pro at $20 a month or higher. You can also use both on one app with Lovable's GitHub sync.
The big difference in one table

| Hosting and database | Built in with Lovable Cloud | You choose and set them up |
| Free option | Yes, 5 daily build credits, up to 30 a month | No, not on the Claude Free plan |
| Lowest paid plan | Pro, $25 a month | Claude Pro, $20 a month or $17 a month billed yearly |

What Lovable is
Lovable is a website where you chat to build an app. It writes the code, sets up the back end, and hosts it. You see the app change as you go. You do not need to install anything.
Key facts, from Lovable's pricing page and docs:
- Free plan with 5 daily build credits, up to 30 a month
- Pro from $25 a month for 100 monthly credits
- Paid credits roll over, and expire 2 months after issue on monthly plans
- Two-way GitHub sync, so changes pushed to GitHub sync back into Lovable
- Lovable's FAQ says "You own your code"
What Claude Code is
Claude Code's docs describe it this way: "Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools." It runs on your computer, inside your project folder.

Key facts, from Anthropic's pricing page and docs:
- Works in the terminal, IDE extensions, a desktop app, and the web
- Included with Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly) and Max (from $100 a month)
- Not included on the Claude Free plan
- Has checkpoints, so you can undo changes, and permissions, so it asks before it reaches beyond your project
Who should use which?
| If you... | Use |
|---|---|
| Have never written code | Lovable |
| Want an app live today with no setup | Lovable |
| Want to see the app change as you chat | Lovable |
| Already have a codebase | Claude Code |
| Want to pick your own hosting and database | Claude Code |
| Need scripts, tests, or work outside the app itself | Claude Code |
Which one costs more?
It depends on how you use it.
Lovable charges by credits. Lovable's own examples: "Make the button gray" used 0.50 credits, and "Add authentication" used 1.20 credits. Pro gives you 100 monthly credits for $25.
Claude Code is part of a Claude plan with usage limits. Pro is $20 a month. Max starts at $100 a month for 5x or 20x more usage than Pro. For teams that pay per use, Anthropic's docs say "the average cost is around $13 per developer per active day" across enterprise deployments.
With Claude Code, you also pay for your own hosting and database. With Lovable, those come built in, though Lovable Cloud and AI usage draw on credits beyond small monthly grants.
What your first hour looks like in each
In Lovable:
- Sign up on lovable.dev. No install.
- Type what your app should do, in plain words.
- Watch the preview build on the screen.
- Ask for small changes, one at a time.
- Publish to a free lovable.app address.
In Claude Code:
- Get a Claude Pro or Max plan.
- Open a terminal and run the install command from Anthropic's docs.
- Make a project folder, or open one you already have.
- Ask Claude Code to plan the app, then build it step by step.
- Pick a host and a database, and deploy it yourself.
See the gap? Lovable gets a beginner to a live link faster. Claude Code asks more of you, but you control every piece.
What about Lovable vs Cursor?
Cursor sits on the same side as Claude Code. It is a code editor with AI agents, now part of SpaceX. Cursor has a free plan, and Plus is $8 a month, but Plus only uses Grok models. If you want an editor you click around in, try Cursor. If you like working in a terminal, try Claude Code. Either one can work on your Lovable code through GitHub.
How to use both on the same app
This is the part most people miss. You do not have to choose forever. Lovable's GitHub integration is a two-way sync. Its docs say "Changes pushed to the active GitHub branch sync back into Lovable."

So one simple flow is:
- Build the first version in Lovable. Get the screens and the database working.
- Connect the project to GitHub in Lovable.
- Open the same code with Claude Code on your computer for harder jobs.
- Push the changes to the active branch. They sync back into Lovable.
- Keep using Lovable for quick visual edits.
My take
If you are new, start with Lovable. You will have something live much faster, and you will learn how apps fit together. When you hit a wall, like a tricky feature or a custom script, bring in Claude Code through GitHub. My vibe coding with Claude guide shows how I use Claude for building.
Here is a video where I break down why most Lovable apps never get users. The fix is not the tool, it is the plan:
My video: Why most Lovable apps fail to get users, and what the small group that succeeds does differently.
Any results mentioned in videos are not typical and are not a promise of income. Your results depend on your work and your market.
