Make money with AI · Beginner guide
Most AI side hustle lists are full of hype. This one is not. Here are nine real options, what each costs to start, and the first step you can take this week.
You can start a real side hustle with AI this month, around a full-time job, without coding. But the best ones are not magic money buttons. They are simple services and small products that solve a real problem for real people. AI just helps you do the work faster.
I started online in May 2019 while I was still an electrical engineer, and I left engineering in March 2020. Today I teach regular people how to use AI to build a business. Below are the nine options I think are most realistic for beginners, plus the warning signs of the scams. I am not promising any income. Results depend on your work, your skills, and your market.
Quick answer
The most realistic AI side hustles for beginners are services for local businesses (AI receptionists, AI websites, simple automations), small AI apps, affiliate marketing with AI-assisted content, faceless video channels, AI-assisted books, content repurposing, and AI setup help. Most can start for under the cost of one or two monthly tools. Pick one, get one customer or one result, then decide if you want to grow it.
How to pick the right one for you
Do not pick the one with the biggest promise. Pick the one that fits your time, your skills, and who you already know. Ask yourself three questions:
- Do I like talking to people? Then local business services may fit. You will need to reach out and sell.
- Do I like making things alone? Then apps, books, or content may fit better. They take longer to get noticed.
- How many hours can I give each week? Be honest. Five steady hours beat twenty hours for one week.

1. Sell an AI receptionist to local businesses
When a business cannot pick up every call, an AI voice agent can answer, take a message, and book appointments. You set it up and charge a monthly fee to run it.
Start-up cost: a platform that can run voice AI. GoHighLevel plans start at $97 a month, and it has a free trial (checked October 19, 2026). Calls and AI use cost extra. Skills: setup, testing, and sales calls. First step: build one demo for a business type you know, like a plumber.
I wrote the full path in how to sell an AI receptionist and how to build one.
2. Build AI websites for local businesses
AI website builders let you make a clean site in an afternoon. Some local businesses still have an old site or none at all. Look around your town and you will find them.
Start-up cost: a website builder plan, often with a free plan to practice. Skills: basic design sense and clear writing. First step: rebuild one real local site as a free sample. See sell AI websites to local businesses.
3. Offer simple AI automations
Think missed-call text back, review requests, or a follow-up email after a quote. Small jobs, but they save owners time every week.
Start-up cost: one automation platform. Skills: patience and testing. First step: pick one automation and build it for your own business or a friend's. My guide on starting an AI service business covers the full plan.
4. Build and sell a small AI app
AI app builders let non-coders build working software by describing it. A small tool that solves one problem for one group can be a real product.
Start-up cost: an app builder plan. Claude Pro, for example, is $20 a month and includes Claude Code (checked October 19, 2026). Skills: picking the right problem matters more than code. First step: find one problem people already pay to fix.
I have done this myself. Freedom Threads, my software that turns YouTube videos into social posts, is a live app with a Chrome extension. For ideas, see micro SaaS ideas and make money with vibe coded apps.
5. Affiliate marketing with AI-assisted content
You recommend products and earn a commission when people buy through your link. AI helps you write, plan, and repurpose content faster.
Start-up cost: free to join most programs. Skills: honest reviews and steady posting. First step: pick one product you really use. The FTC says to disclose your relationship "clearly and conspicuously," and it warns that the words "affiliate link" alone may not be clear enough. Start with affiliate marketing with no money.
6. A faceless YouTube or Shorts channel
AI can help with scripts, voiceovers, and editing. You never have to show your face.
Start-up cost: free to start. Skills: picking topics people search for, and being consistent. First step: post ten videos on one topic before you judge it. To earn from ads, YouTube's help page says you need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

7. AI-assisted books and guides
You can write a short, useful guide with AI as your helper and sell it as an ebook or paperback.
Start-up cost: low. Skills: knowing the topic and editing hard. First step: outline one book on something you know well. Amazon KDP's rules say "We require you to inform us of AI-generated content (text, images, or translations)" when you publish. Content you wrote with AI only helping is called AI-assisted, and KDP says you do not have to disclose that.
8. Content repurposing for creators
Some creators and coaches have long videos and no time to turn them into posts. You take one video and turn it into posts, emails, and short clips with AI help.
Start-up cost: low. ChatGPT Go is $8 a month and Plus is $20 a month (checked October 19, 2026). Skills: good taste and fast turnaround. First step: repurpose one video for free for a creator you like, and ask for feedback. This is the exact problem I built Freedom Threads to solve, so I know the need is real.
9. AI setup help for busy owners
Some owners want to use AI but do not know where to start. You can set up their tools, write their first prompts, and show their team how to use them.
Start-up cost: almost nothing. Skills: patience and clear teaching. First step: help one owner you know save one hour a week, and write down what you did.
How to spot an AI side hustle scam
The FTC has gone after companies that use AI hype to sell business opportunities. In 2024 it announced Operation AI Comply, a sweep of five cases. FTC Chair Lina Khan said, "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal." One case was against Ecommerce Empire Builders, which the FTC says falsely claimed to help people build an "AI-powered Ecommerce Empire."
Watch for these red flags:
- Big income numbers with no proof and no risk warning.
- A done for you store or system that costs thousands up front.
- Pressure to buy today, or to borrow money to join.
- Claims that AI does all the work and you do nothing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest AI side hustle for beginners?
For people who like talking to others, a simple service for local businesses, like an AI receptionist or a website, is often the fastest path to a first customer. For people who prefer working alone, content repurposing or AI-assisted guides are easier to start.
Can you really make money with AI side hustles?
Some people do, but results are not typical and are not guaranteed. AI speeds up the work. You still need a real problem to solve, real customers, and steady effort.
How much does it cost to start an AI side hustle?
Many start for the price of one or two monthly tools. For example, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are each $20 a month, checked October 19, 2026. Some options, like a YouTube channel, are free to start.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Most of these options use no-code tools. Even building an app is now possible by describing it to an AI app builder.
Do I have to tell people I used AI?
It depends on the platform. Amazon KDP requires you to tell it about AI-generated content when you publish. If you earn commissions, the FTC says to disclose that clearly too.
How do I avoid AI side hustle scams?
Be careful with big income claims, expensive done for you systems, and pressure to buy today. The FTC has taken action against several AI business opportunity schemes.
