Vibe coding · Review
Bolt.new builds web apps from a chat. It is fast and it starts free, but tokens decide how far you get. Here is how it works and what it really costs.
Bolt.new is one of the AI app builders I get asked about most, along with Lovable and Cursor. You type what you want, and Bolt writes the code, runs it, and shows you a live preview. You can publish it to the web in a click.
I have compared Bolt with other tools on my YouTube channel, and I teach beginners to build with tools like it. This review uses Bolt's own pricing page and help center, checked October 19, 2026, so you can see the real limits before you start.
Quick answer
Bolt.new is an AI app builder that turns chat prompts into working web apps. It has a Free plan with 1 million tokens a month and a 300K daily cap. Pro is listed at $18 a month billed yearly, with 10 million tokens a month that roll over. Publishing to a free bolt.host address is built in, and paid plans can use a custom domain. It is a strong pick for fast prototypes and simple apps. Bigger projects use more tokens, so plan for that. Prices checked October 19, 2026.
What Bolt.new is
Bolt.new is a browser based tool. You do not install anything. You describe your app in the chat, and Bolt builds it while you watch. You can then ask for changes in plain words, or open the code and edit it yourself.
Bolt's help center says, "the quality of your results will often depend less on how well you know code and more on how clearly and effectively you can express your ideas through prompts." That matches what I see with beginners.
Bolt also connects to tools you may already use. Its help center lists guides for Expo for mobile apps, Figma for design, GitHub for version control, and an import from Lovable.

Source: bolt.new/pricing, checked October 19, 2026. The page shows Pro as "Total of $216" a year next to a crossed out $300, and says yearly billing saves up to 28%. Prices do not include taxes.
If you pay monthly, the price is higher than the yearly rate. Check the toggle on the pricing page before you buy.
How Bolt tokens work
Tokens are how Bolt measures the AI's work. Bolt says, "Tokens are how Bolt measures the work an agent does." Each time Bolt reads your project, thinks, and writes code, it uses tokens.

Here are the rules that matter most, from Bolt's help center:
- Bigger projects cost more per message. Bolt says "larger projects use more tokens per message," because most use comes from reading and syncing your files.
- Free has a daily cap. Free plan tokens have "a daily cap of 300K," and unused daily tokens do not carry over.
- Resets depend on your plan. Free tokens reset on the 1st of each month. Paid tokens reset on your renewal date.
- Paid tokens roll over. Unused paid tokens stay valid for two months.
- Editing code yourself is free. If you hit your daily limit, you can still edit code in Code view, which "doesn't use tokens."
Publishing, hosting, and domains
This is one of Bolt's best parts. Bolt says you can publish "for free at a web address ending in bolt.host." Click Publish, click Publish again, and wait about a minute.
- Free plan: all published sites are public, and show Bolt branding.
- Paid plans: you can make a site private, and use a custom domain. Bolt says "Custom domains are only available on paid plans."
- Domains: you can buy a domain through Bolt or connect one you already own.
Bolt.new pros and cons

What I like: You can go from idea to a live link very fast, with no setup. The Free plan is generous enough to test a real idea. Unlimited databases and free hosting mean fewer extra bills. And the Publish button not using tokens is a nice touch.
What to watch: Token use grows as your project grows, so a big app can burn through a plan faster than you expect. The Free daily cap can stop you mid-session. And like every AI builder, Bolt can get things wrong. Bolt's own tips say, "Don't expect the LLM to have common sense." You still need to test everything.
Bolt.new vs Lovable
People often compare Bolt with Lovable, since both build web apps from a chat. Here is how they line up on price and publishing, checked October 19, 2026.
| Bolt.new | Lovable | |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Yes, 1M tokens a month | Yes |
| Main paid plan | Pro $18 a month, billed yearly | Pro $25 a month, 100 monthly credits |
| How use is measured | Tokens | Credits |
| Free web address | Ends in bolt.host | Ends in lovable.app |

My advice: try both free plans on the same small idea. Pick the one you enjoy working in. You will use it a lot, so that matters more than a few dollars.
Who Bolt.new is best for
- Beginners who want to build a first web app without setting up code tools.
- Founders testing an idea who need a working demo to show people.
- Freelancers who build simple sites and tools for clients.
It may not fit if you are building a large, complex product, or you want full control in a code editor. In that case, a tool like Cursor or Claude Code may suit you better. My Windsurf vs Cursor comparison and my guide on how to use Claude Code cover those.
How to get the most out of Bolt
These tips come from Bolt's prompting guide, plus my own experience teaching beginners:
- Plan before you prompt. Bolt compares your prompt to a blueprint. Write down your main screens first.
- Use Enhance prompt. Click the plus icon in the chat box, then Enhance prompt. Bolt asks you questions and writes a better prompt.
- Build one feature at a time. Bolt suggests you add "individual components and features, one by one."
- Say what should not change. You can even lock files so Bolt leaves them alone.
- Test after every change. Click through the app before you ask for the next thing.
Want more on writing prompts that work? My vibe coding with Claude guide shows the same habits in action.
My verdict
Bolt.new is one of the fastest ways for a beginner to get a real web app live. Start on the Free plan, build one small idea, and watch your token use. If you hit the daily cap often, or you want your own domain, Pro is the next step. Just do the math on tokens before you build something big.
