AI Lead Generation: A Simple System That Follows the Rules

October 24, 2026

Automation · Leads

AI can help you make content, capture leads, and reply fast, any time of day. Here is a simple system, the tools to use, and the rules you must follow.

Lead generation means getting people who might buy to raise their hand. AI does not change that goal. What it changes is how fast you can make content, answer questions, and follow up.

On October 24, 2026, I went through the FTC's CAN-SPAM guide, an FCC ruling on AI voices, HighLevel's Conversation AI docs, and pricing pages for HighLevel and Apollo. Here is a simple AI lead system and the rules that keep you out of trouble.

Quick answer

AI lead generation uses AI tools to attract, capture, and follow up with potential customers. A simple system has four steps: make a useful free thing, capture the lead with a form or chat, reply fast with an AI chat bot, and follow up by email or text the legal way. In the US, the FTC says each email that breaks CAN-SPAM can cost up to $53,088, and the FCC says AI voice calls need prior express consent.

What is AI lead generation?

It is the same lead generation you already know, with AI doing the slow parts. That usually means:

  • Making content faster: posts, short videos, and lead magnets.
  • Replying faster: an AI chat bot that answers questions and books calls at 2 AM.
  • Sorting leads: tagging who is ready to talk and who needs more time.
  • Following up: drafting emails and texts so nobody falls through the cracks.

What it is not: a way to blast thousands of strangers with spam. That breaks the law and burns your name.

A simple 4 step AI lead system

Step 1: Make a useful free thing

People give you their email when you give them something worth it. That might be a checklist, a quiz, a short guide, or a small tool. AI can help you outline and draft it in an afternoon.

My guide on lead magnets covers what works and why.

Step 2: Capture the lead

Put a simple form or chat on your page. Ask for as little as you can, often just a name and email.

Step 3: Reply fast with an AI chat bot

Speed matters. A fast answer can keep the conversation going. This is where AI chat bots shine.

Step 4: Follow up the legal way

Send a short welcome email, deliver what you promised, and share helpful follow ups. Make it easy to opt out. More on the rules below.

Using AI to make content that attracts leads

Content is a low cost way to get leads. AI helps you make more of it without burning out. Here is an older video where I show a no face, no voice way to make traffic videos with ChatGPT:

My video: A no face, no voice approach to making traffic videos with ChatGPT. I recorded this in January 2024, so the tools look different now, but the idea still works.

Watch on YouTube

Any results mentioned in videos are not typical and are not a promise of income. Your results depend on your work and your market.

A few simple ways to use AI here:

  • Turn one long video into five short clips and five posts.
  • Ask AI for 20 questions your buyers ask, then answer one a day.
  • Draft a lead magnet outline, then add your own stories and examples.

Always edit what AI writes. Your own voice and real examples are what make people trust you.

AI chat bots that capture and book leads

One tool I use is HighLevel. Its help center describes Conversation AI like this:

HighLevel help article section What is Conversation AI?, describing an AI tool that replies to inbound messages, collects information, answers questions, and helps book appointments
Screenshot: help.gohighlevel.com, How to set up a Conversation AI bot, captured Oct 24, 2026

The docs say it can "respond to inbound messages, collect information, answer questions, assist with appointment booking, and support workflows." It works across "SMS, Email, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Chat Widget/SMS Chat, and Live Chat."

A smart feature for beginners: the docs say you can test the bot "before setting it live in Suggestive or Auto-Pilot mode." In Suggestive mode, the bot suggests a reply and you approve it. Start there until you trust it.

What it costs

The HighLevel pricing page showed three plans on October 24, 2026: $97, $297, and $497 a month on monthly billing, with a save with annual option. It said "Start with a FREE 14-day trial on any plan below!" If you want to try it, here is my GoHighLevel link (I earn a commission if you buy through this link).

For more ways to use it, see my GoHighLevel automation guide.

Other AI lead generation tools

  • ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini: drafting content, emails, and lead magnets.
  • Apollo: a B2B contact database. Its pricing page showed a Free plan and a Basic plan at $49 per seat per month, billed annually.
  • n8n or Zapier: connecting your form, CRM, and AI so leads get tagged and routed. My guide on how to build an AI agent shows the basics.
  • A CRM: one place to see every lead and every message.

You do not need all of these. Start with one content tool, one capture form, and one way to follow up.

How to sort leads with AI

Not every lead is ready to buy. AI can help you sort them so you spend time on the right people. A simple way to start:

  • Ask one or two questions on your form, like what they need help with.
  • Tag leads based on the answer, so each group gets the right follow up.
  • Let AI summarize long chat threads so you can see what a lead wants at a glance.

Keep a person in the loop for anyone who asks to talk. AI is great at sorting. It is not a replacement for a real call with a real buyer.

The email rules: CAN-SPAM

This part is not optional in the US. The FTC says "Each separate email in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act is subject to penalties of up to $53,088."

FTC CAN-SPAM guide list of main requirements: do not use false header information, do not use deceptive subject lines, identify the message as an ad, tell recipients where you are located, and tell them how to opt out
Screenshot: ftc.gov, CAN-SPAM Act: A Compliance Guide for Business, captured Oct 24, 2026

The main rules from the FTC guide:

  • "Don’t use false or misleading header information."
  • "Don’t use deceptive subject lines."
  • "Identify the message as an ad."
  • "Tell recipients where you’re located." The guide says this means a valid physical postal address in each marketing email.
  • Tell people how to opt out, and honor it. The FTC says "You must honor a recipient’s opt-out request within 10 business days."

AI makes it easy to write emails fast. That also makes it easy to break these rules fast. Read every template before it goes out.

The calling and texting rules for AI voices

If you plan to use an AI voice to call leads, read this first. The FCC confirmed that its rules on "artificial or prerecorded voice" cover AI voices. It says calls that use these tools "require the prior express consent of the called party."

In plain words: do not let an AI voice call people who did not agree to it. Texting has its own consent rules too. When in doubt, only contact people who asked to hear from you, and talk to a lawyer about your exact setup.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying lists and blasting them. It hurts your sending reputation and can break the law.
  • Letting AI send without review. Start in a draft or suggest mode.
  • Fake urgency and fake results. AI can write hype fast. Do not use it.
  • Too many tools. One simple system you run every day beats five tools you set up once.
  • No follow up. Do not stop at one email. Plan at least a short welcome series.

How to start this week

  1. Day 1: Pick one problem your buyers have.
  2. Day 2: Use AI to outline a free checklist or guide that helps.
  3. Day 3: Build a simple page with a form.
  4. Day 4: Write a 3 email welcome series, with an opt out link and your business details.
  5. Day 5: Set up a chat bot in suggest mode to answer common questions.
  6. Days 6 and 7: Make 5 short posts that point to your free guide.
