The Amazon Affiliate Program: Rates, Rules, and How to Join

Affiliate Marketing · Programs

Amazon's affiliate program is the one most people try first. Here is how it works, what it pays, and the rules you need to know before you share your first link.

Almost everyone who starts affiliate marketing looks at Amazon first. It makes sense. People already trust Amazon, and it sells almost everything.

But the rates are lower than many people expect, and the rules are strict. So on October 22, 2026, I read Amazon's own Associates pages: the program home page, the Operating Agreement, the Program Policies, and the commission table. Here is what they say, in plain English.

Quick answer

The Amazon affiliate program is called Amazon Associates. It is free to join. You share special links to Amazon products, and when someone buys through your link, you get a share of the sale. Amazon says you can earn up to 10%, but most categories pay less. Physical books and kitchen pay 4.5%, toys and home pay 3%, and grocery pays 1%. Amazon pays about 60 days after the end of the month, and the lowest payout for direct deposit is $10. Checked October 22, 2026.

What is the Amazon affiliate program?

Amazon calls it the Amazon Associates Program. Its home page says it helps "content creators, publishers and bloggers monetize their traffic." In simple words, you recommend products, and Amazon pays you a share when people buy.

It works in three steps, the same way Amazon shows it:

  1. Sign up. You apply with your website, app, or social account.
  2. Recommend. You use Amazon's link tools to share products with your audience.
  3. Get paid. When someone buys through your link, you get a share of the sale.

Amazon affiliate rates by category

This is the part most people get wrong. Amazon says you can "Earn up to 10%," but only a few categories pay that much. The rate depends on what the person buys. Here are the US rates from Amazon's Standard Commission Income Statement, checked October 22, 2026:

  • 10%: Luxury Beauty, Luxury Stores Beauty, and Amazon Explore.
  • 5%: Digital Music, Physical Music, Handmade, and Digital Videos.
  • 4.5%: Physical Books, Kitchen, and Automotive.
  • 4%: Apparel, Shoes, Jewelry, Watches, Luggage, and many Amazon devices like Kindle, Echo, and Fire TV.
  • 3%: Toys, Furniture, Home, Pets Products, Beauty, Sports, Tools, Baby Products, and more.
  • 2.5%: PC, PC Components, and DVD and Blu-Ray.
  • 2%: Televisions and Digital Video Games.
  • 1%: Amazon Fresh, Grocery, Health and Personal Care, and physical video games and consoles.
  • 0%: Gift Cards, Wireless Service Plans, Alcoholic Beverages, and a few others.
  • 4%: all other categories.

Here is some quick math so the numbers feel real. A $50 kitchen item at 4.5% pays $2.25. A $50 bag of pet food at 3% pays $1.50. A $50 grocery order at 1% pays 50 cents. That is my math from Amazon's table, not a promise of what you will make.

Tip: Amazon also lists flat "bounty" payments for some programs, like certain Audible memberships. Those are separate from the category rates. Check the full statement for the current list.

Amazon's home page says commission is "paid approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which it was earned." So a sale in March gets paid near the end of May.

The Program Policies also set a minimum. For US accounts, the Payment Minimum Chart shows:

  • Direct deposit: $10 minimum.
  • Amazon gift card: $10 minimum, up to $2,000.

If you do not reach the minimum, Amazon can hold your balance until you do. There is one more rule to know. If an account has no real activity for at least 3 years, Amazon can hold back money after giving 7 days' written notice.

How to join Amazon Associates

Amazon says "Bloggers, publishers and content creators with a qualifying website or mobile app" can join. If you are an influencer with a big social following, Amazon points you to a separate program, the Amazon Influencer Program.

Here is the basic path:

  1. Go to affiliate-program.amazon.com and click Sign up.
  2. Add your website, app, or social account, and tell Amazon what your content is about.
  3. Start sharing links with Amazon's link tools.
  4. Wait for review. Amazon's FAQ says, "We will review your application and approve it if you meet the qualifying criteria."

Do not treat sign up as the finish line. Your site needs real, helpful content that Amazon can review. A blank site with only links is a weak start.

The Amazon affiliate rules that trip people up

The Operating Agreement and Program Policies are long. These are the rules I would read twice before you start.

1. You must show Amazon's disclosure

The Operating Agreement says you must "clearly and prominently" show this line, or a similar one Amazon allowed before: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." Put it where people will see it, not buried in a footer.

2. You also need to follow the FTC

Amazon's line is for Amazon. The US Federal Trade Commission has its own rules about telling people when you get paid. Its Q&A says a disclosure should be "easily noticeable, easily understandable, and hard to miss" for ordinary people. Put it right next to your links. Read the FTC's Endorsement Guides Q&A before you post.

3. No bidding on Amazon's name in search ads

The Program Policies say you will not bid on keywords that include "amazon," "Kindle," or other Amazon trademarks in search ads. You can run paid search ads for general terms, but those ads must send people to your site, not straight to Amazon.

4. Do not hide or fake your links

The Program Policies say you will not "cloak, hide, spoof, or otherwise obscure" your site's URL. They also say you will not use a link shortener or button "in a manner that makes it unclear that you are linking to an Amazon Site." If someone clicks, they should know they are going to Amazon.

Is the Amazon affiliate program worth it?

It can be a good first step. It is free, people trust Amazon, and you can link to almost any product. That makes it easy to practice writing reviews and "best of" lists.

But there are real downsides:

  • Low rates. Many big categories pay 1% to 4%.
  • One-time payments. You get paid once per sale, not every month.
  • Strict rules. A broken rule can cost you your account.
  • Slow payouts. About 60 days after the month ends.

My take: Amazon is fine for learning, but many people also look at software programs that pay a share every month the customer stays. I compare several in my list of SaaS affiliate programs. For beginner-friendly options of all kinds, see my best affiliate programs for beginners.

Any results mentioned in videos are not typical and are not a promise of income. Your results depend on your work and your market.

How I would start with Amazon Associates

  1. Pick one small topic. For example, home coffee gear. Narrow topics are easier to write about well.
  2. Check the rate first. Look up the category in Amazon's table so you know what you are working with.
  3. Write helpful posts. Compare products, explain who each one fits, and be honest about the downsides.
  4. Add both disclosures. Amazon's line, and a clear note next to your links for the FTC.
  5. Track what works. Use Amazon's reports to see which posts lead to sales, then make more like them.
