Replit Review: What You Get Free, What You Pay For, and Who It Fits

October 18, 2026

Build with AI · Honest review

Replit can build web apps, mobile apps, and more from chat. The free plan is real, but it has clear limits.

Replit is one of the oldest names in browser coding, and its AI Agent is now a full app builder. It is also the tool used in DeepLearning.AI's free Vibe Coding 101 course.

I have not built on Replit myself, so I will be clear about that. My apps run on Lovable and on my own stack. This review is built from Replit's pricing page and docs, checked on October 18, 2026, so you get the facts without the hype.

Quick answer

Replit is a cloud platform where its AI Agent builds apps from chat. It can make web apps, mobile apps, and more. The free Starter plan has daily Agent credits, Lite build only, and one free published app that goes down after 30 days. Core is $20 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly, and unlocks Full build, connectors, and unlimited published apps. Pro is $100 a month, or $90 billed yearly, for teams of up to 15.

What Replit is

Replit is a cloud workspace where you can build and publish apps in your browser. Its Agent does the building. Per Replit's docs, Core includes all artifact types: web apps, mobile apps, data charts, slide decks, animated videos, and more.

You choose how hard the Agent works with three modes, per the docs:

  • Free Mode for everyday work. It is available on Starter, Core, and Pro, with limits that depend on your plan.
  • Power Mode, a balance of speed and capability for most work.
  • Max Mode, the most capable option for complex work.

Power and Max use monthly credits. Replit's docs say "Replit asks for confirmation before a paid action starts." That is a nice guard against surprise costs.

Replit free plan: what you really get

The Starter plan is free. Per Replit's docs, you get:

  • Daily Agent credits, up to a monthly cap
  • Monthly credits for databases, storage, and publishing
  • Lite build, for quick edits and targeted changes
  • 1 free published app

But here are the limits. Replit says the free published link will automatically go down after 30 days, and it carries a "Made with Replit" badge. Full build, connectors like Stripe and Google, Plan Mode, and converting a design into a working app all need Core.

Mistake to avoid: Launching to real customers on the free plan. The app goes down after 30 days. Use Starter to learn, then move to Core before you share it widely.

What Replit does well

  • Many app types. Web, mobile, charts, slide decks, and more on Core.
  • Clear cost warnings. Replit asks before a paid action starts.
  • Team friendly. Core lets you invite up to 5 builders, and Pro up to 15. Replit's Pro docs say Pro has no per-user fees.
  • Database safety on Pro. Pro can restore your database to any point in the last 28 days, instead of the standard 7.
  • A free course to learn it. DeepLearning.AI's Vibe Coding 101 with Replit is free to enroll.

What to watch out for

  • The free plan is for learning. One app, for 30 days, with a badge.
  • Usage based billing. Replit's docs say complex builds "may cost more than a simple request." Watch the usage dashboard in your first week.
  • Some features use paid APIs. Replit says some Agent features use third-party APIs, billed at the provider's public API rate.
  • Core credits do not roll over. Only Pro lists credit rollover, for two months.

Learn Replit for free

If you are brand new, the best first step is a free course. DeepLearning.AI has a short course called Vibe Coding 101 with Replit. When I checked its page on October 18, 2026, it was listed as a beginner course, 1 hour 34 minutes long, with an Enroll for Free button. The instructors are Michele Catasta and Matt Palmer.

Take the course on the free Starter plan. You will learn how the Agent thinks before you spend money. Then build one tiny app of your own, like a simple to-do list or a sign-up form, so the lessons stick. Keep a note of what each request cost in the usage dashboard. After a week you will know if Replit fits the way you like to work.

My take: pick Replit if you need a mobile app or want a team on one plan. Pick Lovable if you want the simplest path to a web app. My Lovable vs Replit vs Bolt vs Cursor guide goes deeper.

Replit alternatives

  • Lovable for the easiest web app builds. My own software runs on it.
  • Base44 for a cheap start, at $20 a month with lots built in.
  • Bolt if you want unused tokens to roll over, from $25 a month.
  • Overskill (I earn a commission if you buy through this link.) if you plan to sell your app. See my Overskill vs Lovable comparison.
  • Claude Code if you want to work in the code yourself. See vibe coding with Claude.

How to start on Replit the smart way

  1. Write a short brief before your first prompt. My no-code app guide shows how.
  2. Start on Starter and use Free Mode to learn.
  3. Check your allowance in Settings, under Usage.
  4. Move to Core when you need Full build, connectors, or a lasting published app.
  5. Use Power Mode before Max, and only use Max for hard problems.

The method matters more than the tool. Here is how I build software with AI, step by step:
