Bland AI: What It Is, What It Costs, and Who It Fits

AI Tools · Voice AI

Bland lets you build AI agents that make and take real phone calls. Here is what it does, what a minute costs, and what to check first.

AI phone agents can answer calls, book appointments, and follow up with leads. Bland AI is one tool that does this.

On October 22, 2026, I went through Bland's home page, its pricing page and FAQ, its docs, and the FCC's ruling on AI voices in robocalls. Here is what Bland is, what it costs, and what to know before you let an AI call anyone.

Quick answer

Bland AI is a voice AI platform for building AI phone agents that handle inbound and outbound calls. It has two self-serve plans. Start costs $0.14 per minute with no platform fee and no card required. Build costs $0.12 per minute plus a $299 monthly platform fee, with higher limits. Enterprise is custom. Checked October 22, 2026.

What is Bland AI?

Bland calls itself "an enterprise voice AI platform." Its site says customers use it to "build, run, and monitor AI phone agents that hold real conversations at scale." The agents can take calls coming in and make calls going out.

Bland's home page aims high. Its headline is "Voice AI for the calls that can't go wrong," and it says 230+ regulated companies run on Bland. Its examples include banks, healthcare, and government work.

Bland also says it runs on its own models instead of stitching together other vendors. Its site calls it "The only voice AI that runs entirely on its own models." That is Bland's claim, and I have not tested it myself.

What a Bland agent can do

Here are the main jobs Bland lists on its home page:

  • Answer inbound calls without a phone tree, from order status to fraud disputes.
  • Book, confirm, and reschedule appointments.
  • Cover nights, weekends, and busy times when your team is away.
  • Collect and check details on the call, like identity checks.
  • Take payments over the phone and follow up on past due accounts.

Agents can also work on SMS and the web. Bland says it supports 40+ languages, with real time translation in 23 of them.

Bland AI pricing

Here are the plans on Bland's pricing page, checked October 22, 2026:

  • Start: $0.14 per minute. $0 platform fee and no card required. You get 2 credits and an inbound number, which Bland values at $15/mo. Transfers cost $0.05 per minute. Limits are 10 calls at once, 100 calls a day, and 10 knowledge bases.
  • Build: $0.12 per minute plus a $299 per month platform fee. Transfers cost $0.04 per minute. Limits are 50 calls at once, 2,000 calls a day, and 50 knowledge bases.
  • Enterprise: custom, "Contracted to your volume." It adds options like on premises hosting and a forward deployed engineer.

Is the phone line included? Bland says two things

This is worth knowing before you budget. The two pages disagree a little:

  • The FAQ on Bland's home page says one per-minute rate covers the language model, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, "and telephony."
  • The FAQ on the pricing page says, "Telephony is billed separately, on your own carrier or Bland's at pass-through cost."

So plan for carrier costs on top, and ask Bland to confirm for your setup. If you bring your own Twilio account or SIP line, the pricing FAQ says you pay carrier costs directly and you don't pay transfer fees.

When does the Build plan pay off?

The Build plan saves 2 cents a minute but adds $299 a month. Here is the plan cost math, using only the listed per-minute rates:

  • 1,000 minutes: Start is $140. Build is $120 + $299 = $419.
  • 5,000 minutes: Start is $700. Build is $600 + $299 = $899.
  • 15,000 minutes: Start is $2,100. Build is $1,800 + $299 = $2,099.
  • 25,000 minutes: Start is $3,500. Build is $3,000 + $299 = $3,299.
Illustration: table comparing Start and Build monthly cost at 1,000, 5,000, 15,000, and 25,000 minutes, with Build costing less from about 15,000 minutes
Illustration: plan cost math from Bland's listed rates

So Build only costs less at around 15,000 minutes a month or more. Below that, the reason to pick Build is the higher limits, not the lower rate. Start allows 100 calls a day. Build allows 2,000.

How Bland compares to Vapi and Retell

Bland's pricing FAQ makes its own comparison. It says Vapi lists $0.05 per minute and Retell about $0.07 per minute, but those are platform fees only. You then pay for the AI model, speech, and phone line on top.

By Bland's math, most setups come to "roughly $0.13 to $0.30 per minute on Vapi and $0.11 to $0.25 per minute on Retell." These are Bland's numbers about its rivals. Check each company's own pricing page before you decide. I cover Retell's own plans in my Retell AI guide, and Vapi's in my Vapi AI guide.

How long setup takes

Bland gives two answers here, and both can be true:

  • The pricing FAQ says "Most teams deploy a first agent within a day on the self-serve plans."
  • The home page FAQ says most production agents "go live in two to six weeks," depending on how complex the call is.

My take: a simple test agent can be fast. A real agent that talks to your customers needs time for testing.

Bland's docs also say the platform "is getting a major upgrade," and the docs are being updated over the coming weeks. Expect some screens to change.

How to test a Bland agent safely

Here is the order I would use for a first agent. This is my own process, built around Bland's plan limits.

  1. Start on the Start plan. There is no platform fee, so a test costs only the minutes you use.
  2. Pick one simple job. For example, answering after hours calls and taking a message. Skip payments and identity checks at first.
  3. Write down what the agent must never do. No promises about price, no medical or legal advice, and a clear way to reach a human.
  4. Call it yourself many times. Try being rude, confused, or off topic. See how it handles each one.
  5. Have a few people on your team call it. Fresh ears catch odd answers you have stopped noticing.
  6. Go live on inbound first. Answering people who call you is lower risk than calling people who did not ask.
  7. Read the transcripts every day for the first week. Fix the instructions where it slips.

Only move to Build when you hit the Start plan limits, like 100 calls a day, or when your minutes pass about 15,000 a month.

The phone call rules you must know

This part matters more than the price. On February 8, 2024, the FCC announced a ruling that recognizes calls made with AI-generated voices are "artificial" under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).

In plain words: the rules for robocalls apply to AI voice calls too. Before your agent calls anyone, make sure you have the right consent. Laws also vary by state and country. I am not a lawyer, so talk to one before you run outbound calls at scale.

Bland says it holds SOC 2 Type I and Type II reports and is HIPAA compliant with a signed BAA. That helps for health and finance work, but it does not replace your own legal check.

Who Bland fits

  • A good fit: businesses with lots of calls, strict rules, and a team to test and watch the agent.
  • Worth a test: agencies building voice agents for clients. The Start plan has no platform fee, so testing is cheap.
  • Maybe not: a solo business that just needs a few calls answered. A simpler AI receptionist may be easier. See my guide to AI receptionist software.
