Base44 Review: What It Does Well and Where It Falls Short

October 18, 2026

Build with AI · Honest review

Base44 promises a full app from one prompt. Here is what that really means, what it costs, and who should try it.

Base44 is one of the most searched AI app builders right now. You type what you want, and it builds an app with a database, logins, and hosting already set up.

I want to be upfront. I have not built on Base44 myself. My own apps run on other tools. So this review is built from Base44's own pricing page, help docs, and public news, all checked on October 18, 2026. I will tell you what it does well, where it falls short, and how it stacks up against Lovable.

Quick answer

Base44 is a no-code AI app builder owned by Wix. It builds the front end, back end, database, and logins from plain-English prompts. It has a free plan with 25 message credits a month, and paid plans from $20 a month (or $16 a month billed yearly). It is a good pick for simple internal tools and first apps. The main downsides are tight credits on the low plans, credits that expire each month, and GitHub sync only listed from the Builder plan up.

What Base44 is

Base44's pricing page says it best: "Base44 is a no-code AI platform that uses vibe coding to build fully-functional apps and websites." You describe the app in plain language. Base44 builds the screens, the database, user sign-in, and more.

Every plan includes the same core parts, per the pricing page:

  • AI app building and a visual editor
  • A built-in back end and database
  • User sign-in and user management
  • Cloud storage and an analytics dashboard
  • Marketing tools and debugging tools

Who owns it? Wix bought Base44 in June 2025. Wix's press release says Base44 "will continue to operate as a distinct product and business." That matters because a big company stands behind it, so it is not a tiny side project that could vanish next month.

The Free plan lets you build up to 5 apps. Paid plans allow unlimited apps and let you connect your own domain. The Builder plan adds AI model choice and GitHub integration.

How Base44 credits work

This is the part most reviews skip. Base44 uses two kinds of credits, per its credits help page:

  • Message credits are used when you chat with the AI to build or fix your app.
  • Integration credits are used when your live app uses Base44's built-in services, like sending an email, making an image, or running an AI call.

Base44's docs give rough ranges for message credits. A simple text or color change is about 0.5 credits. Improving a small feature is about 1 credit. Adding a complex module is about 2 credits. A big app-wide change is about 3 to 4 credits. Base44 says these are estimates, and your real cost shows up after each message runs.

Here is the good part. The docs say "Manual visual edits, such as dragging elements, changing layouts, or editing text directly in the editor, do not use credits." So fix small things by hand and save your credits for real work.

Here is the catch. Base44 says unused credits expire when they reset. On the Free plan you can use up to 5 credits a day and 25 a month. On paid plans, credits reset once a month on the day you subscribed. When you run out, building pauses until the reset, unless you upgrade.

Mistake to avoid: Asking for huge changes on the Free plan. Base44's docs say a request like "rebuild this page for mobile" can still use a few credits, because the AI has to review many files. Make small, focused asks.

What Base44 does well

  • Everything is built in. Database, sign-in, hosting, and analytics come with every plan. You do not have to connect five services on day one.
  • Payments are an option. Base44's docs describe "Base44 Payments powered by Wix" for selling in your app, plus a Stripe setup guide. Base44 Payments needs the Builder plan or higher, and only businesses in supported countries can use it, so check the list.
  • You keep ownership. Base44's FAQ says "You own everything you build on Base44: your code, your data, your users."
  • Free manual edits. Dragging and typing changes in the editor costs nothing.
  • A real free plan. You can build and test up to 5 apps before you pay anything.

Where Base44 falls short

  • Low credit counts on cheap plans. 100 message credits on Starter goes fast if you make lots of changes.
  • Credits do not roll over. Unused credits expire at each reset. Lovable lets paid plan credits roll over for a while. Base44 does not, except one carry-over cycle when you upgrade from one monthly plan to a higher monthly plan.
  • Code access depends on the plan. The FAQ mentions two-way GitHub sync, but the plan cards only list GitHub integration from Builder ($50 a month) up. Check this before you build on Starter.
  • Cost is hard to predict. Base44's own docs say there is no way to preview an integration credit cost before you run an action.

Base44 vs Lovable

These two are the most common head-to-head. Here is how they compare on the facts that matter most.

My take: Base44 is a little cheaper to start, and it bundles more by default. Lovable is better if you want your code in GitHub from day one or want unused credits to carry over. Who should use Base44?

You are...Base44 is...
Building a simple tool for yourself or your teamA great fit. Start on Free.
Testing an app idea with a few real usersA good fit. Starter is enough to start.
Planning to grow a real software businessPossible, but plan on Builder or higher for GitHub access
A developer who wants full control of the codeProbably not your first pick. Look at code tools instead.

Your first hour on Base44

  1. Write a one-paragraph brief first. Who is the app for, and what is the one job it does? My no-code app guide shows how.
  2. Sign up for the Free plan. Start there before you pay for anything.
  3. Send one clear first prompt. Include the main screen, the data to save, and who can sign in.
  4. Fix small things by hand. Text and layout edits in the editor do not use credits.
  5. Test it like a user. Sign up as a new person on your phone.
  6. Show it to 3 people who have the problem. Only then think about paying for a plan.

The tool is the easy part now. The hard part is building something people want. That is the lesson in this video. It is about Lovable, but it applies to Base44 too.

My video: I explain why most AI-built apps never get users, and the simple steps that put you in the small group that does. The lessons apply to any AI app builder.

Any results mentioned in videos are not typical and are not a promise of income. Your results depend on your work and your market.

One more option. If you want an AI builder made for selling software, with built-in checkout, look at Overskill (I earn a commission if you buy through this link.). I compared it head to head in Overskill vs Lovable. To learn how vibe coding differs from older no-code tools, see vibe coding vs no-code.
