Build with AI · Pricing
Claude Code is not sold on its own. You get it through a Claude plan or pay per use. Here is what each path costs today and which one fits you.
Here is the short version. Claude Code is not free. The cheapest way to get it is the Claude Pro plan at $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay for a year. If you use it all day, Max costs $100 or $200 a month. You can also skip plans and pay per use through the API.
I build with AI tools every week and teach regular people to do the same. Claude Code is one of the tools I like most. But the pricing confuses a lot of beginners, so I put it all in one place. Every price below comes from Anthropic's own pricing page and help center, checked October 19, 2026.
Quick answer
Claude Code comes with paid Claude plans. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Max 5x is $100 a month and Max 20x is $200 a month. Team seats start at $25 a month billed monthly. The free plan does not include Claude Code. You can also pay per use with API credits instead of a plan. Prices checked October 19, 2026.
Claude Code pricing at a glance
There are two ways to pay. You can buy a plan with a monthly fee and usage limits. Or you can pay for what you use through the Claude API. Most beginners should start with a plan, because the bill stays the same each month.

| Plan | Price (checked Oct 19, 2026) | Claude Code? |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month with a yearly plan ($200 up front) | Yes |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | Yes |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | Yes |
| Team, Standard seat | $25 a seat a month, or $20 billed yearly | Yes |

Is Claude Code free?
No. The plan comparison on claude.com/pricing shows Claude Code as not included on the Free plan. The free plan is still useful for chatting with Claude and testing ideas. But to run Claude Code in your terminal or code editor, you need a paid plan or API credits.
If you are brand new, that is fine. Start free in the chat app. Learn how to describe what you want. Then upgrade when you are ready to build. My beginner's guide to Claude Code shows the setup steps.
Claude Pro: the starting point
Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay $200 for a year. It includes Claude Code. The pricing page says Pro is "For everyday work."
Pro is a good fit if you:
- Are learning Claude Code for the first time.
- Build small apps, tools, or websites a few times a week.
- Want one bill for both Claude chat and Claude Code.
The Claude Help Center says your Pro plan also covers Claude Code inside code editors like VS Code, Cursor, and JetBrains tools. That usage counts toward the same limits.
Claude Max: 5x or 20x
Max is for people who use Claude all day. The Help Center lists two tiers:
- Max 5x: $100 a month, with five times the Pro plan's per-session usage.
- Max 20x: $200 a month, with 20 times the Pro plan's per-session usage.
The Help Center says Max is "currently available as a monthly subscription only." Max also comes with monthly API credits for the Claude Platform. But read the fine print. The Help Center says those monthly API credits "can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps." So do not count them as extra Claude Code time.

How the usage limits work
Plans do not give you unlimited use. This is the part most people miss. The Help Center says Pro and Max plans have "a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit." Those limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code. So a long chat in the Claude app uses the same pool as your coding session.
Here is what that means in real life:
- You can work hard for a while, then hit a pause until your five-hour window resets.
- If you use it heavily every day, you can also hit the weekly limit.
- Bigger projects use more of your limit, because Claude reads more of your files.
To see where you stand, type /status or /usage inside Claude Code. The Claude Code docs say /usage on a paid plan shows "plan usage bars" and a breakdown of what counts against your limits.
What to do when you hit the limit
The Help Center lists four options for Pro users when they reach a limit:
- Wait. Your limit resets. This costs nothing.
- Turn on usage credits. This lets you keep working past the limit for an extra charge.
- Use API credits. You can switch to a Claude Console account and pay standard API rates.
- Upgrade. The Help Center suggests Max 5x if you "consistently hit limits."
My advice for beginners is simple. Wait the first few times. Notice when you hit the limit and why. If it happens every week, then upgrade. Do not pay for Max on day one.
Paying per use with the API
The other path is the Claude API. The Claude Code docs say it "charges by API token consumption." A token is a small piece of text. You pay for the text you send in and the text Claude writes back.
Here are the API prices for current models from claude.com/pricing, checked October 19, 2026. MTok means one million tokens.
| Model | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $10 per MTok | $50 per MTok |
| Opus 5.5 | $4 per MTok | $20 per MTok |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $2 per MTok | $10 per MTok |
| Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens) | $0.10 per MTok | $0.50 per MTok |
So what does that add up to? The Claude Code docs give one real number. Across enterprise deployments, "the average cost is around $13 per developer per active day and $150-250 per developer per month." That is for working developers at companies. A beginner building a small project will likely use less. But the API has no monthly cap unless you set one, so watch it.
The API makes sense if you run Claude Code in scripts and automations, or if you only code a few days a month.
The API key mistake that costs people money
This one is worth its own section. The Help Center warns that if you have an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable set on your computer, Claude Code will use that key "instead of your Claude subscription." That means API charges, even though you pay for Pro or Max.
If your API bill looks strange, check for this first. To stay inside your plan, the Help Center says to log out, log back in with only your Pro or Max account, and decline the API credit option when it shows up.
Team and Enterprise pricing
If you have a small team, look at the Team plan. The pricing page lists it "For teams of 2 to 150." There are two seat types:
- Standard seat: $20 a seat a month billed yearly, or $25 billed monthly.
- Premium seat: $100 a seat a month billed yearly, or $125 billed monthly. It has "5x more usage than standard seats."
Both include Claude Code. You can mix seat types, so only your heavy users need Premium. Enterprise is priced as a seat fee plus usage at API rates. The pricing page lists US$20 a seat a month billed yearly, with a 20 seat minimum.
How to keep your Claude Code bill low
These tips come from Anthropic's Claude Code cost docs. They help on any plan, because using fewer tokens also stretches your limits.
- Clear between tasks. The docs say to "Use /clear to start fresh when switching to unrelated work." Old context wastes tokens on every message.
- Pick the right model. The docs say Sonnet "handles most coding tasks well and costs less than Opus." Save Opus for hard problems.
- Plan first. Press Shift+Tab to use plan mode on big tasks. Claude proposes an approach before it builds, which saves costly redo work.
- Keep requests small. Ask for one feature at a time. You will get better results and use less.
- Check /usage weekly. On paid plans it flags habits that use a lot of your limit, with a tip for each.
