Automation · Comparison
n8n is great, but it is not the only way to automate your work. Here are four solid alternatives, what they cost, and who each one fits best.
n8n is one of my favorite automation tools. It is powerful, it has a free self-hosted version, and it is great for AI agents. But it is not for everyone. Some people want something simpler. Others want a cheaper hosted plan or a tool made for coders.
On October 24, 2026, I checked the pricing pages for n8n, Zapier, Make, Activepieces, and Pipedream. Here is what I found, in plain words.
Quick answer
Four n8n alternatives to look at are Zapier (simple for beginners, free plan with 100 tasks a month), Make (visual builder, free plan with 1,000 credits a month), Activepieces (open source, free plan with 1,000 credits a month and Plus at $20 a month billed monthly), and Pipedream (built for developers, free to build and Startup at $99 a month billed annually). n8n's own hosted Starter plan was $20 a month billed annually on October 24, 2026.
Why look for an n8n alternative?
People usually switch for one of these reasons:
- It feels too technical. n8n gives you a lot of control, and that can feel like a lot at first.
- They do not want to self-host. Running your own server takes time and care.
- They need a specific app. Another tool may connect to it with less work.
- Price fits better elsewhere. Each tool counts usage in a different way.
If none of these bother you, n8n may still be the right pick. My guide on n8n pricing breaks down every plan.
First, what n8n costs today

On October 24, 2026, n8n's pricing page showed:
- Starter: $20 a month, billed annually, with 2.5k workflow executions.
- Pro: $50 a month, billed annually, with 10k workflow executions.
- Business: $800 a month, billed annually.
- Community Edition: the page says "A standard, self-hosted version of n8n is available on GitHub."
n8n says "Pricing is based on monthly workflow executions, regardless of complexity." That means one run of a long workflow counts the same as one run of a short one. That is a big plus for complex automations.
n8n alternatives at a glance

Each tool counts usage differently. Zapier counts tasks. Make, Activepieces, and Pipedream use credits. n8n counts executions. So the cheapest tool depends on what your workflows look like.
1. Zapier: simple for beginners
Zapier has a simple builder and connects to thousands of apps.
On October 24, 2026, the pricing page showed:
- Free: $0, with "Zaps, Tables, and Forms included (100 tasks per month)."
- Professional: starting from $19.99 a month billed yearly, or $29.99 billed monthly.
- Team: starting from $69 a month billed yearly, or $103.50 billed monthly.
The page has a monthly and yearly switch, and the yearly option says "Save 33%." Check which one you are looking at before you compare.
One thing to know: Zapier says "Every step in a Zap and every external connector call uses tasks." Long workflows can use up tasks fast. For a deeper look, see n8n vs Zapier.
Best for: beginners who want simple automations running today.
2. Make: a visual builder with more control
Make sits between Zapier and n8n. You build automations on a visual canvas, and you can add filters, routes, and loops without writing code. I compare it head to head in Make vs Zapier.
Make's pricing help says "As of August 27, credits are the billing unit in Make." It also says that on the Free plan, "you have 1000 credits per month."
I could not get Make's paid plan prices to load in my checks, so I am not listing them here. Check the Make pricing page for current numbers.
Best for: people who like seeing the whole flow as a picture and want more control than Zapier.
3. Activepieces: open source and simple
Activepieces is similar to n8n, but simpler. It is open source, and its hosted plans are easy to understand.

On October 24, 2026, the pricing page showed:
- Free: $0, "Free forever, no card," with 1,000 credits a month.
- Plus: $20 a month with 10,000 credits a month.
- Team: $200 a month with 50,000 credits a month.
Going over your credits on paid plans cost $0.007 per credit, according to the page.
Best for: people who want an open source tool with a cleaner, simpler feel than n8n.
4. Pipedream: made for developers
Pipedream is built for people who are comfortable with code. Its pricing page says "Free to build. Pay when your integrations go to production."
- Free: $0, "Free, no credit card required."
- Startup: $99 a month billed annually, or $150 billed monthly, with 10,000 usage credits included.
- Business: volume pricing on an annual contract.
Best for: developers building integrations or AI agent tools for other users.
Which tool I would pick for common jobs
Here is how I would match the tool to the job if I were starting fresh today:
- Send new form leads to a spreadsheet and an email list: Zapier or Activepieces. This is a short, simple flow, and both make it easy.
- Post content to several social sites on a schedule: Make. Its visual canvas makes it easy to see each branch.
- Build an AI agent that reads email, checks a calendar, and drafts replies: n8n. It has strong AI nodes and handles long flows well. My guide on how to build an AI agent shows how.
- Let your own app's users connect their accounts: Pipedream. That is what it is built for.
- Run lots of automations on a tight budget: self-hosted n8n or Activepieces, if you are willing to manage a server.
None of these are wrong answers. Pick one, build something small, and learn as you go.
What to look for if you want AI in your automations
If you want to add AI to your automations, check these things first:
- Can it call the AI model you want? Some tools include AI models. Others need your own API key.
- How does it count AI steps? Zapier says AI steps draw from the same task pool as everything else. Other tools may count them in a different way.
- Can a person review the output? For anything a customer sees, add an approval step before it goes out.
- Can you see what happened? Good run history makes it much easier to fix a broken flow.
My guide on Zapier alternatives covers a few more tools if none of these fit.
How to choose the right one
Ask yourself three questions:
- How technical am I? New to this? Start with Zapier or Activepieces. Like control? Try Make or n8n. Write code? Look at Pipedream.
- How long are my workflows? Long workflows with many steps often cost less on n8n, because it counts executions, not steps.
- Do I want to self-host? n8n and Activepieces are open source. Zapier and Make are hosted only.
My honest take: if you are new, start with whatever feels simplest to you, build three useful automations, and only then worry about price. Switching later is normal.
What about self-hosting n8n instead?
If price is your main reason for leaving n8n, look at self-hosting first. The Community Edition is free to download, and you pay only for your own server. It takes more setup and care. My guide on self-hosting n8n walks through it.
A simple rule: if you are not sure what a server is, start with a hosted plan. You can always move to self-hosting later, once you know which workflows you really use every week.
Mistakes to avoid when switching
- Comparing only the sticker price. A task, a credit, and an execution are not the same thing.
- Moving everything at once. Move one workflow, test it, then move the next.
- Forgetting your logins. Each app you connect needs to be reconnected in the new tool.
- Skipping the free plan. Every tool here has a free way to try it. Use it.
