AI Tools · Pricing
Perplexity is an AI search tool that shows its sources. Pro adds better models, deep research, and access to its Computer agent. Here is what that really means.
Perplexity is the AI tool I reach for when I want an answer with sources I can check. The free version is good. So when is Pro worth paying for?
On October 23, 2026, I went through Perplexity's plans page, its pricing hub, and its help articles on Pro, plans, and credits. Here is what you get, what it costs, and the parts that are easy to misread.
Quick answer
Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month when billed annually, checked October 23, 2026. It adds deep research, access to top AI models, the choice of model, more uploads, and expanded access to Perplexity Computer. New Pro subscribers get 4,000 one-time bonus credits, and paid Pro plans include weekly Computer usage. Max costs $167 a month billed annually. Students can get Education Pro for $10 a month.
What is Perplexity Pro?
Perplexity is an AI answer engine. You ask a question, and it searches the web and writes an answer with citations. You can click each source and check it yourself. That is the big reason people like it.
Perplexity's help center says Pro is "our premium subscription plan, designed to enhance your search experience with advanced features and capabilities."
The free plan, which Perplexity calls Standard, gives you "Practically unlimited basic searches." It picks the model for you. It does not include advanced AI models, image generation, or premium support.
How much is Perplexity Pro?
Here is what the plans page showed on October 23, 2026:
- Free: $0 a month.
- Pro: $17 a month when billed annually.
- Max: $167 a month when billed annually.

Both prices on the page were for yearly billing. I did not see a monthly price on the pages I checked, so look at checkout before you pay if you want to go month to month.
There are a few other options:
- Education Pro: $10 a month for verified students and teachers, checked through SheerID.
- Enterprise Pro: per-seat pricing that "starts at $40/month or $400/year/seat."
Both cards also had a limited-time offer of free Computer credits. Those offers change, so do not count on them.
What you get with Pro
The plans page lists these for Pro, on top of everything in Free:
- Expanded access to Perplexity Computer.
- 4,000 bonus credits.
- Deep research.
- Access to top AI models, and the choice of which one to use.
- Creating documents and apps.
- More usage limits and memory.
The help center adds more, like "10x as many citations per answer" and more file and photo uploads. You can upload PDFs, spreadsheets, audio, video, and images, then ask questions about them.
A note on model names
Perplexity's pages do not agree on which models are included. The help article and the plans page listed different model versions on the same day. Models change often, so I am not listing them here. Check the model picker after you sign up.
Search modes you get with Pro
Perplexity's help center describes four search modes: Best, Pro Search, Reasoning Search, and Research. Here is the simple version:
- Best: the default, for quick searches. It picks a model based on your question. The help center says "Best" mode is available "without quota limits."
- Pro Search: for detailed answers with many sources. Pro users get "a high volume of daily searches" here.
- Reasoning Search: for hard questions that need several steps of thinking.
- Research: for deep reports on a big topic. It picks the models for you and writes a long answer.
The help center also notes that access to some advanced models "may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage." So Pro is generous, but it is not endless.
How I would use Pro in a small business
Here are a few simple, real jobs where Pro can save time:
- Check a market before you build. Ask what tools already exist for a problem, what they cost, and what people complain about. Then click the sources.
- Prep for a sales call. Upload a prospect's public price list or brochure and ask for the three questions you should ask them.
- Compare tools. Ask for a side-by-side of two apps you are thinking about. Then check the prices on each company's own page, because AI answers can be out of date.
- Turn research into a document. Ask Computer to build a one-page report you can share with a client.
The key is to treat every answer as a first draft. Perplexity shows its sources so you can check them. Use that.
How Perplexity credits work
This is the part that confuses people. Normal searches do not use credits. The help center says, "Perplexity Ask searches do not consume credits."
Credits are for Perplexity Computer. That is Perplexity's AI assistant that does multi-step work for you, like building a report or a small web app. The help center says, "Today, 100 credits equals $1." A quick fact uses about 15 to 70 credits, and bigger projects use more.

Here is how credits work on each personal plan:
- Pro: no monthly credits. Instead, you get a weekly amount of Computer usage, plus 4,000 one-time bonus credits.
- Max: 10,000 credits a month, plus 35,000 one-time bonus credits.
Watch out for this. The bonus credits are one-time, and the help center says they "expire in about 30 days." The bonus is one per account. It does not come back if you cancel and sign up again.

Weekly Computer usage on Pro
Paid Pro plans include some Computer usage each week before credits are used. A few details matter:
- It resets every week, starting from the first time you use it, not from your billing date.
- Unused weekly usage does not roll over.
- It is not included with promo or free Pro plans.
- Perplexity says it is "rolling out gradually," so your account may not have it yet.
When the weekly usage runs out, Computer switches to your credits. If you have no credits and auto-refill is on, Perplexity charges your card. If auto-refill is off, the task stops until you buy credits or your usage resets.
Is Perplexity Pro worth it?
Here is how I think about it.
Pro is likely worth it if you:
- Research things for work most days, like markets, competitors, or tools.
- Want to pick the AI model for a hard question.
- Upload files and want answers from them.
- Want to try an AI agent that builds reports or simple apps for you.
Stay on Free if you:
- Ask a few quick questions a day.
- Already pay for another AI tool that does what you need.
- Do not need deep research or file uploads.
My simple test: use Free for two weeks. Write down each time you hit a wall. If you hit one most days, Pro makes sense. Curious about Manus, the other agent in the video below? See my Manus AI pricing guide.

Any results mentioned in videos are not typical and are not a promise of income. Your results depend on your work and your market.
A simple way to decide
Use the free plan for one normal work week. Write down every time you hit a limit or wish the answer went deeper. If that happens a few times a week, Pro will likely pay for itself in saved time. If it never happens, stay on Free and keep your money.
Pro vs Max
Max is for heavy users. At $167 a month billed annually, it is about ten times the price of Pro. You get 10,000 monthly credits, the highest usage limits, frontier models, and early access to new features.
You may not need Max. If you are not running long Computer tasks every day, start with Pro and see if you ever run short.
Billing tips
- Cancel before you delete your account. The help center says to cancel Pro first.
- App store plans are managed there. If you paid on your phone, cancel in your phone's subscription settings.
- Students should verify. Education Pro costs less than regular Pro.
- Use it for one clear job. Pick one task, like weekly competitor research, and see if Pro saves you time.
