Claude Pro vs Max: Which Plan Should You Pay For?

October 22, 2026

Build with AI · Claude

Max costs five to ten times more than Pro. Here is what that money buys, how the limits work, and a simple way to decide.

Claude Pro is $20 a month. Claude Max starts at $100. That is a big jump, so it is worth knowing exactly what you get before you upgrade.

On October 22, 2026, I went through Claude's pricing page, its plan FAQ, and Anthropic's help articles on the Max plan and usage credits. Here is a clear side by side, and how I would decide.

Quick answer

Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month on a yearly plan ($200 billed up front). Claude Max comes in two tiers: Max 5x at $100 a month and Max 20x at $200 a month, billed monthly only. Max gives you 5x or 20x the usage of Pro per five-hour session, plus higher output limits, priority access, and $100 or $200 a month in API credits. Both include Claude Code. Claude Pro vs Max: the prices

Here is what each plan costs on Claude's pricing page, checked October 22, 2026:

  • Pro: "$17 Per month with annual subscription discount ($200 billed up front). $20 if billed monthly."
  • Max 5x: $100 a month.
  • Max 20x: $200 a month.

Max is monthly only. Anthropic's Max help article says, "The Max plan is currently available as a monthly subscription only." It also notes these are web prices, and mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform.

Quick math on Pro: paying monthly for a year is 12 times $20, or $240. The yearly plan is $200. So paying yearly saves you $40.

How the usage limits work

This is the real difference between the plans. Claude does not give you a fixed number of messages. The FAQ says, "there's no fixed message count."

Instead, every plan has limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window. Paid plans add weekly limits on top. Your use of Claude on the web, desktop, phone, and in Claude Code all comes out of the same pool.

Here is how the plans compare, from the FAQ:

  • Pro gives you at least 5x more usage per five-hour session than Free.
  • Max gives you 5x or 20x more usage per five-hour session than Pro.

How far that goes depends on how long your chats are, which model you use, and which features you use. Long coding sessions in Claude Code use much more than short questions.

What else Max gets you

Besides more usage, the pricing page lists these Max extras:

  • Higher output limits for all tasks.
  • Early access to advanced Claude features.
  • Priority access at high traffic times.
  • Monthly API credits: $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 a month on Max 20x.

A note on those API credits

The API credits are for building on the Claude Platform, the developer side of Claude. They are not extra chat time. Anthropic's usage credits article says, "Monthly API credits don't apply to usage credits in Claude, Claude Code, or Claude Cowork."

So if you never build with the API, do not count those credits as part of the value.

What Pro and Max both include

A lot is the same on both plans. Pro already includes Claude Code, Projects, more Claude models, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Max includes "Everything in Pro, plus" the extras above. I explain how Projects work in my Claude Projects guide.

The FAQ is clear on Claude Code: "Claude Code is included in all paid plans." It shares the same limits as your chats. I break down the coding side in Claude Code pricing.

What happens when you hit your limit

The FAQ lists three choices when you run out:

  1. Wait for the limit to reset.
  2. Move to a higher plan.
  3. On paid plans, turn on usage credits to keep working "at standard API rates."

Usage credits are a middle step. You turn them on in Settings, then Usage. Anthropic's article says they "are charged separately from your paid Claude subscription." You can set a monthly spend limit so the bill never surprises you.

Tip: Before you jump to Max, try Pro with usage credits and a small monthly cap for a few weeks. If you pay for extra credits most weeks, Max may be the better deal.

How upgrading works

Upgrades take effect right away. The FAQ says unused time on your current plan "is credited toward the new one, so you won't pay twice for the same days."

If you are on a yearly Pro plan, there is one more thing. The Max article says if your remaining Pro balance is more than your Max price, you get a credit for the rest. To get it, your billing address must match your old subscription.

Downgrades take effect at the end of your billing period. Your chats, projects, and files stay with your account either way.

What about Free and Team?

Two other plans sit on either side of Pro and Max.

Free covers everyday questions. The FAQ says Pro gives "at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free." Free does not include Claude Code, so if you want to code with Claude, you need a paid plan.

Team is for groups. The FAQ says Standard seats on Team give more usage than Pro, and Premium seats give 5x more than Standard. If you are buying for a few people at a company, look at Team instead of buying several Max plans.

Who should pick Pro, and who should pick Max?

Pick Pro if:

  • You use Claude a few times a day for writing, research, or planning.
  • You use Claude Code for small projects and rarely hit a limit.
  • You want to pay yearly and save.

Pick Max 5x if:

  • You hit your Pro limit most days.
  • You work in Claude Code for hours at a time.
  • You would use the higher output limits on long tasks.

Pick Max 20x if:

  • You still hit limits on Max 5x.
  • Claude is a core tool you use all day, every day.

My take: start with Pro. Watch your usage in Settings, then Usage, for a couple of weeks. Upgrade only when the limits are really slowing you down.

A two-week test before you upgrade

Here is a simple way to decide with real numbers instead of guesses:

  1. Stay on Pro for two normal work weeks.
  2. Each time you hit a limit, write down the day and what you were doing.
  3. Turn on usage credits with a small monthly cap, so you can keep working when you hit a limit.
  4. At the end, add up what you spent on credits.

If you hit limits only now and then, Pro plus a few credits is likely cheaper. If you hit them almost every day, or your credit spend gets close to the $80 gap between Pro and Max 5x, Max is worth a look.

Common Pro vs Max mistakes

  • Counting the API credits as chat time. They are for the Claude Platform, not for Claude or Claude Code.
  • Expecting a yearly Max plan. Max is monthly only.
  • Upgrading on a busy day. One heavy day is not a pattern. Look at two weeks.
  • Forgetting the weekly limit. Even with more per session, paid plans have weekly limits too.
  • Buying on mobile without checking the price. Anthropic says mobile pricing may vary.

Canceling

You can cancel anytime, and your plan stays active until the end of the billing period. The FAQ says to cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid the next charge. For Pro and Max, your account moves to the Free plan when the period ends.
