Affiliate Marketing · Networks
CJ is a long-running affiliate network. It connects you with big brands in one place. The part that trips people up is the payment cycle, so I break it down step by step.
CJ, short for Commission Junction, is one of the big affiliate networks. Instead of signing up with each brand one by one, you join CJ and apply to brands from one dashboard.
On October 23, 2026, I went through CJ's publisher page and its own articles on payments and account setup. Here is how it works, when you really get paid, and how to set up your account so brands say yes.
Quick answer
CJ Affiliate is an affiliate network that connects publishers, like bloggers and creators, with brands that pay commissions. You join CJ, apply to each brand's program, and use CJ links to promote them. Commissions move through stages: New, Locked, Closed, and Paid. On the standard cycle, a sale locks on the 10th of the next month, and CJ pays around the 20th, with a second round around the 28th for some currencies.
What is CJ Affiliate?
CJ is an affiliate network. That means it sits in the middle between two groups:
- Advertisers: the brands that sell things and pay commissions.
- Publishers: the people who promote them, like bloggers, YouTubers, newsletter writers, and coupon sites.
CJ tracks the clicks and sales, and it handles the payments. Its publisher page says it has been a leader in affiliate tech "for over 20 years." It also says it offers "dozens of payout currencies and two monthly payouts."
For you, the big plus is one login for many brands. You apply to each brand inside CJ. Each brand decides whether to approve you.
How CJ Affiliate works, step by step
- Sign up as a publisher. You add your website or other places you promote, plus your payment and tax details.
- Fill out your profile. Brands look at this when you apply. More on that below.
- Find brands. Search the advertiser list for brands that fit your audience.
- Apply to programs. Each brand reviews you. Some say yes fast. Some take longer or say no.
- Get your links. Once approved, you create tracking links for that brand.
- Promote. Share the links in helpful content, with a clear disclosure.
- Get paid. Commissions move through CJ's payment cycle and get paid out once you hit your minimum.
CJ's publisher page mentions a Deep Link Generator tool. A CJ article says it lets you "create affiliate deep links directly from any page within an advertiser's website." So you can link to the exact product you are talking about, not just a home page.
The CJ payment cycle, explained simply
This is the part to read closely. A CJ support article (from May 2022) breaks commissions into stages. Here they are in plain words.

1. New
When you get a sale, the commission shows up as New. The brand can still fix or change it at this stage. For example, they may remove it if the order is returned.
2. Locked
Once a commission is locked, the brand can no longer edit it. When that happens depends on the brand's locking method:
- Standard: sales lock "on the 10th of the month following the Event Date." So a sale on December 3 locks on January 10.
- Custom: the brand picks a lock date between 7 and 60 days after the sale.
- Open-ended: there is no set date. This is common for things like travel, where the brand waits for the trip to happen.
A brand on the standard cycle can also extend a commission, but CJ says only "for one additional pay period before it locks."
3. Closed
Closing happens around the 13th and 22nd of the month. Closed means your account and sales passed review, and the brand has enough money in its account to pay.
4. Paid
The article says payments are made around the 20th for all currencies, and around the 28th for USD, GBP, or EUR. Not every publisher gets the second round.

So here is the rough timeline on the standard cycle. A sale in March locks on April 10, closes around April 13, and pays around April 20, as long as you are over your minimum. That is about three to seven weeks from sale to payment.
Payment minimums
CJ only pays once your closed balance reaches the minimum payment amount set in your account. The payment article gives $100 as an example.
An older CJ article from 2019 said switching to direct deposit lets you change your minimum to $50, versus $100 for checks. That is old, so check the current options in your own account under Account, then Administrative Settings.

Why your CJ payment might be late
Here are the reasons CJ's own articles point to:
- The brand has a long lock time. Check the brand's program terms to see its locking cycle.
- The brand extended the commission. That pushes it back one pay period.
- The brand does not have enough funds. CJ says it "cannot pay publishers until the additional funds are deposited."
- You are under your minimum. The balance rolls over until you reach it.
- Your payment or tax info is missing. Fix it in your account settings.
And one thing you cannot change: CJ says it is "unable to expedite or process any payments earlier than the two payment dates."
How to get approved by brands on CJ
Brands look at your profile when you apply. CJ calls your Network Profile "your chance at a great first impression." Here is what to do:
- Write a real description. CJ suggests including your site's strengths, goals, traffic, audience, and business model.
- List your promotional methods. Blog, email, YouTube, social. CJ says, "Advertisers will use these to determine if you're a good fit for their programs."
- Keep your website info up to date. Name, URL, category, and description.
- Have real content first. A site with a few helpful posts in the brand's niche looks much better than an empty one.
- Apply to brands that fit. A cooking blog applying to a kitchen brand makes sense. Applying to everything does not.
If a brand says no, that is normal. Keep building content and apply again later, or try another brand in the same space.
Read each brand's program terms
Every brand on CJ sets its own rules. Before you promote, open the brand's program terms and look for:
- The commission rate and what counts as a sale.
- The locking cycle, so you know when you will be paid.
- Any items or actions that do not earn a commission.
- Rules on coupon sites, paid ads, and bidding on the brand's name.
Breaking a brand's terms can get your commissions reversed. Read them once, and save a copy.
CJ notes you can always find this in the advertiser's program terms by clicking the brand's name anywhere in the CJ Account Manager. I would check them again every few months too. Brands change their rates and rules, and it is on you to keep up. A quick look now saves a lost commission later.
Disclose your links
In the US, the FTC says you need to tell people when you get paid through a link. Its FAQ says "Paid link" right next to an affiliate link "should be an adequate disclosure." Put the note close to the link, in plain words.
Is CJ a good fit for beginners?
CJ is a good fit if you:
- Have a blog, newsletter, or channel with real content.
- Want to promote known brands.
- Are fine waiting a few weeks for payments.
It may be harder if you:
- Have no site or content yet. Many brands will not approve an empty profile.
- Need fast payouts.
