Build with AI · Coding Agents
Claude Code is great, but it is not the only AI coding agent. Here are six alternatives, what each costs, and the kind of person each one fits best.
Maybe you hit Claude Code's usage limits. Maybe you want a free option, or a tool that lets you use other AI models. Or maybe you just want to see what else is out there.
I checked six popular alternatives on October 20, 2026, using each tool's own pricing page and docs. Below is what each one is, what it costs, and who should pick it.
Quick answer
The best Claude Code alternatives in 2026 are OpenAI Codex (included with ChatGPT plans), Google's Antigravity CLI (free tier with weekly limits), GitHub Copilot (Pro at $10 a month), Cursor (now part of SpaceX), and two open source picks, OpenCode and Cline, where you bring your own AI model. Pick Codex if you pay for ChatGPT, Copilot if you want the lowest monthly price, and OpenCode or Cline if you want open source and model choice.
Why look for a Claude Code alternative?
Claude Code is an AI agent that works in your terminal. It reads your code, makes changes, and runs commands. I like it a lot. You can read why in my Claude Code review.
But there are good reasons to look around:
- Cost. Claude Code is not on Claude's Free plan. The cheapest way in is Claude Pro, at $17 a month billed yearly or $20 billed monthly, checked October 20, 2026.
- Limits. Heavy users can run into usage limits.
- Model choice. Claude Code is built around Claude models. Some people want to use other models too.
- Open source. Some teams want a tool they can read and change.
Here is a quick table of all six. It is my own summary card, built from each tool's pricing page.

1. OpenAI Codex: best if you pay for ChatGPT
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It is the closest match to Claude Code. There is a Codex CLI for your terminal, plus an app, editor plugins, and a cloud version.
OpenAI's help center says "Codex is included across ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go." Usage limits depend on your plan. On the Codex page, Plus is $20 a month and Business is $20 per user a month for 2 or more seats, billed yearly. Both checked October 20, 2026.

Getting started is simple. OpenAI's help center says to open your project folder, run codex, and sign in with your ChatGPT account when it asks. Then you describe the task.
Pick Codex if you already pay for ChatGPT. For a deep side by side, read my Claude Code vs Codex comparison.
2. Antigravity CLI: Google's free option
This one needs a quick history lesson. Google used to point people to Gemini CLI. On June 18, 2026, Gemini CLI stopped serving free users and Google AI Pro and Ultra users. Google points those users to a new tool called Antigravity CLI. Google's developer blog announced the change on May 19, 2026. My Gemini CLI vs Claude Code post explains what changed.
Antigravity's site calls its CLI "The lightweight, fast, terminal-first surface to work with Antigravity agents."
The pricing, checked October 20, 2026:
- Individuals: $0 a month, with "Basic weekly rate limits."
- Google AI Pro: more rate limits. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month.
- Google AI Ultra: even more rate limits, from $99.99 a month.
If you liked Claude Code's extras, this part matters. Google says Antigravity CLI keeps Agent Skills, Hooks, Subagents, and Extensions, which are now called plugins. So the ideas you learned in Claude Code carry over, even if the files are different.
Pick Antigravity CLI if you want a free start, or if you already pay for Google AI Pro.
3. GitHub Copilot: lowest monthly price
GitHub Copilot is no longer just autocomplete. GitHub's docs say "All plans include Copilot CLI and the Copilot app." So you get a terminal agent too.
The plans, checked October 20, 2026:
- Free: $0, with 2,000 completions a month.
- Pro: $10 per user a month, with 1,500 monthly AI credits.
- Pro+: $39 per user a month.
- Max: $100 per user a month.

Here is a twist. The Pro plan lists "Access to 3rd party agents (Claude Code and Codex)." So Copilot is less of a rival and more of a hub. Pick it if you want one low monthly bill and you already live in GitHub.
4. Cursor: best if you want an editor
Cursor is an AI code editor, not just a terminal tool. It also has an agent and a CLI. Big news here: Cursor's blog says "Cursor has officially been acquired by SpaceX." That post is dated August 14, 2026.
The pricing changed after that. When I checked on October 20, 2026:
- Free: $0, with limited agent requests.
- Plus: $8 a month. The page says "Only Grok models are available on this plan."
- Premium: $30 a month, with third party models at API list price, billed separately by usage.
- Super and Ultra: $100 and $200 a month.
So if you want Claude or GPT models in Cursor, plan on Premium plus usage. Pick Cursor if you want to see and edit code in an editor while the AI works. My Cursor vs Claude Code post goes deeper. Thinking of leaving Cursor? See my Cursor alternatives list.
5. OpenCode: open source, any model
OpenCode calls itself "The open source AI coding agent." It works in your terminal, as a desktop app, or in your editor.
What I like is the choice. Its site says you can use "75+ LLM providers through Models.dev, including local models." You can also log in with a GitHub Copilot account or a ChatGPT Plus or Pro account. It says free models are included too.
Pick OpenCode if you want an open source tool and the freedom to switch models. You pay your model provider, not OpenCode.
6. Cline: free and open source, pay for what you use
Cline is an open source coding agent. It runs as a VS Code extension and a CLI. Its pricing page says "Cline is free for individual developers."
The catch: you pay for the AI. Cline's page lists "Purchase and Model Inference at Cost or BYOK." BYOK means bring your own key. You plug in an API key from a model provider and pay them for what you use.
Pick Cline if you want no subscription and you are fine watching your own API bill.
How to choose in 30 seconds
| If you... | Try this |
|---|---|
| Already pay for ChatGPT | Codex |
| Want a free start from a big company | Antigravity CLI |
| Want the lowest monthly bill | GitHub Copilot Pro |
| Want an AI code editor | Cursor |
| Want open source and any model | OpenCode or Cline |
| Still like Claude best | Stay on Claude Code |
My honest take: if Claude Code works for you, the main reason to switch is price or limits. Try one alternative on a small side project first. Give it a real task, like fixing a bug or adding a small feature. Then compare.
Not a coder at all?
All six tools above are for people who are fine reading code. If you just want to describe an app and get it built, an AI app builder may fit better. See my Lovable vs Claude Code post to see the difference.
Mistakes to avoid when you switch
- Judging on one prompt. Every agent has good and bad days. Give each one a few real tasks.
- Ignoring usage costs. Tools where you bring your own key can cost more than a flat plan if you use them a lot.
- Forgetting your setup. Your CLAUDE.md, skills, and hooks are Claude Code features. Other tools have their own versions, so plan time to move them.
- Not checking the price page. These prices change often. Check before you buy.
