AI App Builders · Guide
An AI app builder turns a plain-English description into a working app. Here is how they work, what five popular ones cost per month, and a simple way to build your first app.
An AI app builder lets you describe an app in plain words, and the AI writes the code for you. You test it, ask for changes, and publish it. You do not need to know how to code.
I build a lot of apps, and I have used Lovable, Claude, and Overskill to do it. In this guide, I explain how these tools work, what they cost, and how to pick one. I checked every price on October 27, 2026, with the monthly setting selected.
Quick answer
An AI app builder is a tool that turns a written description into a working web app. You chat with it to make changes, then publish. Most charge a monthly plan that includes credits or tokens for AI work. On October 27, 2026, the lowest paid monthly plans were $25 for Overskill Starter, Lovable Pro, and Bolt Pro, and $20 for Base44 Starter and Replit Core. Credits are not the same unit across tools, so compare what a typical change costs.
What an AI app builder is
An AI app builder is a chat window that builds software. You type something like: Make a simple app where my clients can book a call and pay a deposit. The AI writes the pages, the database, and the logic. Then it shows you a working preview.
From there, you keep chatting. Make the button green. Add a field for phone number. Send me an email when someone books. Each change uses some of your plan's AI allowance.
When you like it, you publish it to a web address. Many builders also let you connect your own domain on paid plans.
If you are brand new, my guide on how to build an app with no coding experience walks through the basics.
How AI app builders charge
Most AI app builders do not charge per app. They charge a monthly plan, and the plan comes with a set amount of AI work. Each tool names this its own way:
- Overskill uses credits. Its pricing page says "Credits pay for AI work when you generate or modify an app."
- Lovable uses credits. Pro lists "100 monthly credits."
- Bolt uses tokens. Pro lists "10M tokens/month, rollover included."
- Base44 uses message credits and integration credits.
- Replit uses a dollar amount of usage. Core lists "$20 towards more powerful models."
This is why you cannot compare credit counts across tools. 2,500 credits on one tool and 100 credits on another do not mean one gives 25 times more. What matters is how far a plan gets you on a real build.
What a change costs on Overskill
Overskill's FAQ gives real numbers. It says a typical change uses 400 to 1,500 credits, "and most land around 700." It says a fresh build from a description usually uses 2,000 to 8,000 credits. There is "no quote before a change runs," but the credits used show in the chat after.
So on Starter, with 2,500 credits a month, my math says that is about 3 typical changes at 700 credits each. Or one fresh build plus a little editing. Plan your first month around that. Overskill also says "Plan credits refill every month and don't carry over," while credit packs you buy "never expire and carry over month to month."
What popular AI app builders cost

Here are the monthly prices I found on each pricing page on October 27, 2026, with Monthly selected. Yearly plans cost less on most of them.

Overskill
- Starter: $25 a month with 2,500 credits a month, 1 custom domain per app.
- Studio: $99 a month with 12,000 credits a month, plus frontier models and Overskill Max.
- No free plan. The FAQ says "Every new account starts with 500 credits so you can build something real before choosing a plan."
Lovable
- Free: $0, with "No credit card needed."
- Pro: $25 a month with 100 monthly credits.
- Business: $50 a month with 100 monthly credits, plus SSO and team tools.
Bolt
- Free: $0 with "1M tokens/month to try Bolt."
- Pro: $25 a month with 10M tokens a month.
- Teams: $30 a month per member.
Base44
- Free: $0 with 25 message credits a month and up to 5 apps.
- Starter: $20 a month with 100 message credits.
- Builder: $50, Pro: $100, and Elite: $200 a month.
Replit
- Core: $20 a month.
- Pro: $100 a month, with up to 15 collaborators.
Monthly vs yearly
All five pricing pages have a yearly option that costs less. Here is how each page labels the savings: Lovable says "2 months free," Bolt says "SAVE UP TO 28%," Base44 says "SAVE 20%," Replit says "Up to 10% off," and Overskill says "Save with annual billing."
My advice: pay monthly for your first month or two. AI app builders change fast, and you want to be sure a tool fits before you commit to a year.

How to pick an AI app builder
Here are the questions I would ask before paying for any of them:
- Can I try it first? Lovable, Bolt, and Base44 have free plans. Overskill gives 500 starting credits.
- Can I use my own domain? Check which plan adds it.
- Can I get my code out? Overskill's FAQ says "On any plan, use Export ZIP in the Publish dialog to download your app's code, database structure and data."
- What happens when I run out? On Overskill, "Generation pauses when your credit balance runs out." You can buy a credit pack or change plans.
- What happens if I cancel? Overskill says "Your published apps stay online and your data isn't deleted."
- What else will I pay for? Overskill's FAQ says to budget for extra credits, "plus any connected-service charges and payment processing fees."

How to build your first app with AI

- Pick one job. One app, one problem. A booking page, a simple tracker, or a quiz.
- Describe it clearly. Say who uses it, what they do, and what they see after. Short and specific beats long and vague.
- Build a first version. Let the AI make it, then click around the preview.
- Test it like a user. Try to break it. Fix one thing per message, so you know what each change did.
- Share it. Publish, then send it to a few people and ask what confused them.

What I use
I have used Lovable, Claude, and Overskill to build apps. One real example is a course companion app for my Freedom Launch Accelerator program, built with Next.js, Supabase, and Claude.
Overskill is one of the builders I have used. You can read my is Overskill free? guide and my Overskill vs Lovable comparison. If you want to try it, the link is at the end of this post.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI app builder?
An AI app builder is a tool that turns a written description into a working web app. You chat with it to make changes, then publish the app to a web address.
How much does an AI app builder cost?
On October 27, 2026, with monthly billing, Overskill Starter, Lovable Pro, and Bolt Pro were $25 a month, and Base44 Starter and Replit Core were $20 a month. Lovable, Bolt, and Base44 also have free plans.
Is there a free AI app builder?
Lovable, Bolt, and Base44 list free plans. Overskill has no free plan, but every new account starts with 500 credits.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You describe what you want in plain words, and the AI writes the code. It still helps to test carefully and ask for one change at a time.
Can I get my app's code out?
It depends on the tool. Overskill says that on any plan you can use Export ZIP to download your app's code, database structure, and data.
Why can't I compare credits across AI app builders?
Each tool defines credits or tokens in its own way, so 100 credits on one tool is not the same as 100 on another. Compare what a typical change or build costs instead.
